WELCOME IN KRAKOW

As the story goes, the name of Krakow derives from a Prince Krak, who in Poland is thought of as a Slav. But it’s also probable that the name originates from the Celts who used to inhabit this land, which has been proved by archeological discoveries. The name would have sounded like ‘Carragh’ then. In Czech legends there is also a trace of a hero called Krok. The most ancient part of the city was situated on strategic Krakow Hill. It used to be one of the most important cities in the ancient tribal nation of Poland. The first mention of Krakow as an important trade city is dated in 966. In 1000 Krakow became the seat of Bishops and in 1038 the capital of Poland. During XVth and XVIth centuries Krakow as a capital was developing its architecture, trading, manufacturing, culture and science. The Wawel Castle was broadened and redecorated in Renaissance style. The Main Square was brought to a state of splendor. During the reign of Zygmunt August, Krakow had approximately 30,000 inhabitants. King Zygmunt III Waza transferred the capital to Warsaw. However, the Cathedral in Wawel remained the coronation place for the Polish kings.

After the third annexation of Poland Krakow was occupied by Austrians. During the years 1809-1815 it belonged to Warsaw Duchy as the capital of that province. During 1815-1846 Krakow was the capital of a tiny part of the independent Commonwealth of Krakow. It was then that the thorough modernization of the city occurred. Previously it was still at the level of the Middle Ages. Most of city walls were destroyed and in place of those the Planty Park was created. After the “Krakow Revolution” in 1846 it was again occupied by Austria and remained under Austrian control until 1918 when Poland regained independence. In 1850 the majority of the city was destroyed by fire. During 1939-1945 Krakow was the capital of the General Province. Since 1945 Krakow has belonged to Poland again. In 1951 the Socialist city Howa Huta was coupled with Krakow
